Newsletter archive - 115 days to go by Nigel Risner:
Good Morning
I trust you had a great summer.
For those of you who got a well deserved rest, well done
Regardless of the weather i hope you learnt to relax, meditate, sunbathe or just chilled out at home doing what you wanted to do.…
I worked, played hard, saw my son in New York, and have now been planning my schedule for the rest of 2008. See below for details on how to make the best of the last quarter.
My daughter got fantastic grades in her A levels so proud of her.
She is now going to take a gap year before going to university.
She plans to travel, work and have a blast. Sometimes I wish we could all have a gap year.
So I am coming up with a new coaching programme for 2009 to help people do just that.
Live the dream, have a blast and do what you have always wanted too
Only 6 people will invited for the journey if you are interested email Alison@nigelrisner.com
This week spoke at a conference for a major retailer.
Didn't have long approx. 23 minutes.
Realised that if you want to make an impact,
Hit them hard in the beginning
Even harder in the middle
soften them up for the ending
and then killer blow at the end
Did it work? The emails and testimonials said short sharp to the point.
why waste time?
tell them what's important
why its important and then how they can do it.
If you would like me to inspire your team, or even give them a kick start to greatness in the run up to Christmas let me know.

Preparing for 2009
It's hard to realise that the year is almost over but that's what my calendar says. While the "third quarter" won't officially be over until the end of the month, most of us will not get much done during December. That means now is the time to review 2008, strategies your plans for the next few weeks, and begin thinking about next year.
Most of us will not formalise our 2009 goals for several more weeks, but it's now is the time to begin contemplating them.
This week, take a few minutes to review your financials for 2008. Are you at least two-thirds of the way "there?" If not, what will you do in September and October to finish strong? What "worked" this year, and what hasn't? What have been your strongest profit centres this year, and what products or services should be reduced (or eliminated) because they aren't producing like you hoped? Review your numbers and take notes.
This week, take a few minutes to consider your personal successes this year. Are your primary relationships as rich and fulfilling as you'd like? Did you get the vacations, weekend breaks and family time you wanted? I hope so! If not, what will you do to strengthen this area in the weeks ahead? This week, Alison bought the 2009 year-at-a-glance calendars, They aren't filled in yet, but we've blocked out birthdays, things that are a must and a few other "special" days--in red. Business trips and other commitments are in blue,
The details for 2009 won't be settled for a few weeks, but now is the time to begin the process. What will you achieve in the brand new year? Think about it.
Quotes
"Begin somewhere; you cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do."
-- Liz Smith
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."
-- Jeremy Kitson
"It only takes one person to change your life - you."
-- Ruth Casey
"You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face, and show the world all the love in your heart. Then people gonna treat you better; You're gonna find, yes, you will, that you're beautiful as you feel."

Humour
Several people have sent me several versions of these "facts" over the years, and I've even used them before, but I still think they provide a useful reminder. Somehow, we all survived childhood and it seems appropriate to be grateful. Enjoy!
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's or even the early 80's, probably shouldn't have survived childhood.
Our baby cribs were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids or locks on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No mobile phones. Unthinkable!
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these things. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents?
We had fights and got black and blue and learned to get over it.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out any eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Football had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors!
Test scores were not adjusted for any reason.
Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.
The idea of parents bailing us out if we got in trouble in school or broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the school or the law. Imagine that!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors, ever.
We had freedom, failure, success, and responsibility --- and we learned how to deal with it. And you're one of them!
have a great week
All my love
Nigel
